YouTube Video

You Will Need

  • Main fabric
  • 1cm (3/8") width elastic
  • Matching thread
  • Basic sewing tools such as fabric scissors, chalk, iron etc.
  • Optional: a size or brand label (to help distinguish the front from the back when you wear the shorts)
  • Optional for the ruffled hem style: approximately 2 meters of 6mm wide elastic to help with gathering, this method is only shown in the YouTube video here. The written instructions show how to gather the ruffles using only your sewing machine, so if you use this method, you don’t need the extra elastic.

Fabric Recommendations

  • Light to medium weight woven fabrics with little or no stretch. For beginners, it’s recommended to choose a non-slippery fabric that won’t fray a lot. Examples include linen or cotton plain weaves, poplin, lawn or gauze. Silk, viscose/rayon or polyester wovens with some drape can also be used and will be slightly more difficult to sew.
